AMP Pages Do Use Site’s Crawl Budget

amp crawl budgetIf you think a lot about Googlebot crawl budget, when you implemented AMP pages, the use of AMP pages has probably crossed your mind.  After all, many think of AMP as a Google initiative and it is Googlebot that crawls it for Google.

But what about looking at the use of Googlebot from the site perspective?  When Googlebot crawls an AMP page, does it use some of that site’s crawl budget?  The answer is yes.

The question of crawl budget came up to Dave Besbris, Vice President of Engineering at Google.  And he explained that since AMP pages are separate pages, they do still require Googlebot to crawl them, and indeed, use some of the crawl budget.

But even with AMP pages using crawl budget, they do not require webmasters to submit a new or different sitemap exclusively for Google.  Instead, Google will discover the AMP URLs from the original non-AMP version of the page, and then crawl the AMP pages there.

It also isn’t necessary to ensure that Googlebot is crawling AMP pages en masse or immediately because AMP articles are still only appearing within the top news carousel.  However, Google has stated that AMP content could appear in other parts of the search results, including AdWords.
